WHEN WEDNESDAY COMES
FREEMAN-SHEFFIELD |
<your background>
1.Q Tell
me about the first time you can remember being thrilled.
1.A Being lost in Marks and Spencer
in Sheffield at the age of 3. Very scared, remember chasing around shop
looking for my mother!
2.Q What's
been your most frightening thrill ever?
2.A Every time I land in an airplane
is exhilarating for me….I'm one of those people who claps on touchdown.
3.Q What's
the smallest or slightest thing to have thrilled you?
3.A Like the personal attention you
get from visiting the Dentist, doctor etc. The feeling of being made to
feel special.
4.Q Tell
me why you're not a sensible person.
4.A I'm not
a sensible person because I married your sister! (Joke) Because I enjoy
being under pressure and having to make decisions when not having all
the facts - why am I doing my current job?
5.Q What
were you doing the last time you were really bored?
5.A
Sat at my desk filling in a half year review for a member of staff…..however,
it could have been one on any number of other pointless tasks!
6.Q What's
the most uninhibited thing you've ever done?
6.A Dancing at parties in my underpants.
7.Q What
things have you considered doing for thrill, but were too concerned about
the risks?
7.A Tattoo….pain! Sauna ……
being unfaithful!
8.Q I
always dreamt about being a paramedic, driving an ambulance and saving
lives; what about you?
8.A [no response]
<your thrill>
To answer these next 14 questions, you should
think about a particular time you were thrilled.
9.Q Describe
this thrill in a nutshell, in one sentence. (there's time to expand later)
9.A Felt exhilarated
after seeing my tribe (Wednesday) beat their biggest enemies (United)
against all the odds.
THE SETTING...
10.Q Where
and when did it take place?
10.A
September 4th 2002 - Hillsborough.
11.Q Tell
me a bit about yourself around this time.
11.A Long suffering football supporter,
the victim of many jibes from enemy tribe.
PREPARATION...
12.Q How
did the moment arise? Was it planned?
12.A Being
at the event was planned but the result is always unplanned.
YOUR FEELINGS...
13.Q List
the sequence of events leading up to your thrill, and how you felt at
each stage. The smallest detail could be important (this is your chance
to expand).
13.A Days of nervous anxiety as I
would always accept a draw for such a game because the fear of losing
is so great. Prior to the game went for a pre-match drink to steady the
nerves. United were clear favourites to win the game and for the first
half of the game played Wednesday off the pitch - perhaps the most exhilarating
parts of the game were when our piggy opponents contrived to miss guilt
edged chances, too numerous to mention or our goalkeeper managed to make
one unlikely save after another.
Wednesday improved in the second half and eventually
scored an undeserved goal after 70 minutes, to make the moment even more
sweet the goal was scored by our new striker who had just come off the
bench and scored with his very first touch in a blue & white shirt.
This was followed by other easy chances for United to stick one in the
onion bag but they didn't……..and incredibly Wednesday managed
to get another to seal the win. Euphoria!
14.Q At
the exact moment of thrill, how did your mind and body feel?
14.A Lots of thrills along the way
but when we first scored I was uncontrollable, screaming, shouting, jumping,
hugging etc.
15.Q What
thoughts were going through your head?
15.A Oh god
can we hang on?
16.Q What
did you do immediately afterwards?
16.A Hugged
Dad, scream etc. etc.
THE RISKS...
17.Q What
were the most likely things that could have put you off going through
with it?
17.A Fear of
failure makes you not want to attend such matches
OTHER PEOPLE...
18.Q How
were other people important to your thrill?
18.A 30,000
other people felt exactly the same way - 9,000 on the other end felt sick.
On a more personal level I was at the game with four friends and my Dad
and it was a great feeling to share.
19.Q What
do you imagine other people were thinking throughout your thrilling episode?
19.A See question 18 - either the same or
the opposite!
20.Q Some
people probably don't understand how such a thing can thrill you; explain
it to them.
20.A Tribalism,
sense of belonging
EQUIPMENT...
21.Q Why
were certain objects or equipment important to your thrill?
21.A A football,
full stadium, couple of pints…...
REPEAT PERFORMANCE...
22.Q If
you've done something like this before, how does the last time compare
to the first time you did it?
22.A It actually gets better as you
get older….
23.Q
If you did it again, what things could
be added or changed to make it even better?
23.A Nothing really, most
of the factors are outside of my control. I suppose I could start supporting
another tribe which stages bigger games but don't think this would work…..
